Refrigerants for Light Duty Vehicles

A Low GWP Refrigerant Option for Today's Innovative Vehicles

Light duty vehicles, classified as passenger cars and trucks with a gross vehicle weight under 3,856 kilograms (8,500 pounds), have traveled the roads since the late 1800s. Today, there are more of these light-duty vehicles on the road than ever before, and driver safety is paramount.

One major safety concern for drivers of light duty vehicles is unclear focus due to uncomfortable cabin temperature. To remedy this issue, manufacturers have innovated more efficient, better-performing air conditioning (AC) systems that operate using non-ozone depleting (ODP), low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.

A Sustainable Shift to HFO Refrigerants

Opteon™ refrigerants meet or exceed automaker requirements for low-GWP solutions for light duty vehicle AC systems. These hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) based refrigerants offer the best balance of properties and performance.

A majority of light duty vehicles use R-134a, a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant. However, the GWP of Opteon™ YF is <1—significantly better than R-134a's GWP of 1300. Additionally, Opteon™ YF refrigerants have a limited atmospheric lifetime measured in days, whereas HFCs can remain in the atmosphere for years.
